RESUMO

After the implementation of the European Space for Higher Education, the contents of the Radiology and Physical Medicine Area that were taught in the Medicine Degree have also been incorporated into the new degrees of Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, and, to a lesser extent, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Logopedia, and Biomedical Engineering As a whole, the basic concepts of radiology and radiological protection are taught in Murcia in 5 different degrees with a total of 52.5 ECTS credits, participating in the training of 1219 students each academic year. This incorporation in the new degrees has tripled the number of subjects in which undergraduate teaching is taught, and doubled both the number of ECTS credits and the number of undergraduate students to whom it directs its training work. Thus, given the possible creation of new university degrees in the near future (Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy Technicians), it would be necessary to involve a greater number of accredited professionals, from different specialties, and to optimize teaching resources (bibliography, material teacher, clinical cases, etc.,) for its usefulness in the different subjects that share similar contents.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have established an understanding of reasons for e-cigarette use and associated e-cigarette use patterns such as use frequency, yet the critical extension to associated e-cigarette dependence outcome remains under-researched. This study used longitudinal data to examine whether the reasons for e-cigarette use predict a higher/lower level of e-cigarette dependence. METHODS: This study recruited college students who were current e-cigarette users from Fall 2019 to Fall 2020 (four semesters) at three public universities in the Midwest and South of the U.S. Those who participated for at least two semesters were included (N = 366). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. E-cigarette use dependence was assessed using the Penn State Electronic Cigarette Dependence Index. A linear mixed model with a random intercept and a random slope was conducted to examine the longitudinal association between reasons for e-cigarette use and dependence, controlling for demographics and other covariates. RESULTS: Participants who used e-cigarettes for relaxation (ß = 0.63, p < 0.05) and due to their good taste (ß = 0.63, p < 0.05) had a higher level of e-cigarette dependence. Participants using e-cigarettes for experimental purposes had a lower level of e-cigarette dependence (ß = -1.21, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the importance of addressing e-cigarette use reasons and their relationship to e-cigarette dependence. Prevention and intervention efforts aimed at developing more effective strategies should consider the various e-cigarette use reasons associated with dependence risks, such as enhancing awareness of the use dependence risk related to good taste of e-cigarettes and use for relaxation, as well as incorporating early screenings for use.

Background: Medical school clerkship grades are used to evaluate orthopedic surgery residency applicants, however, high interinstitutional variability in grade distribution calls into question the utility of clerkship grades when evaluating applicants from different medical schools. This study aims to evaluate the variability in grade distribution among medical schools and look for trends in grade distribution over recent years. Methods: Applications submitted to Rush University's orthopedic surgery residency program from 2015, 2019, and 2022 were collected from the Electronic Residency Application Service. Applications from the top 100 schools according to the 2023-2024 U.S. News and World Report Research Rankings were reviewed. The percentage of "honors" grades awarded by medical schools for the surgery and internal medicine clerkships were extracted from applicants' Medical Student Performance Evaluation letters. Results: The median percentage of honors given in 2022 was 36.0 % (range 10.0-82.0) for the surgery clerkship and 33.0 % (range 6.7-80.0) for the internal medicine clerkship. Honors were given 6.6 % more in the surgery clerkship in 2022 compared to 2015. There was a negative correlation between a higher (worse) U.S. News and World Report research ranking and the percentage of honors awarded in 2022 for the surgery and internal medicine clerkships. Conclusion: There is substantial interinstitutional variability in the rate that medical schools award an "honors" grade with evidence of grade inflation in the surgery clerkship. Residency programs using clerkship grades to compare applicants should do so cautiously provided the variability demonstrated in this study.

BACKGROUND: Past research describes robust associations between education and health, yet findings have generally been limited to the examination of education as the number of years of education or educational attainment. Little is known about the specific features or processes underpinning education that are health protective. The objective of the current study was to address this gap by examining specific aspects of early education pertaining to student characteristics and experiences, as well as features of the classroom environment, in predicting cardiometabolic health in adulthood. METHODS: Subjects were 1364 participants in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD, 1991-2009) and recent SECCYD 30-year follow-up, the Study of Health in Early and Adult Life (SHINE, 2018-2022). Models examined individual education indicators (student social skills, student-teacher relationship quality, and classroom emotional and instructional quality in the period of elementary school and student academic performance between ages 54 months and 15 years) in relation to a composite of cardiometabolic risk in adulthood (ages 26-31), reflecting central adiposity, blood pressure, insulin resistance, inflammation, and dyslipidemia. Models were adjusted for key explanatory factors including socio-demographics, infant characteristics, parental socioeconomic status (SES), and child health status. Follow-up analyses were performed to test potential mediators of early education effects on adult health, including adult SES (educational attainment, household income) and health behaviors (diet quality, activity level, sleep duration, smoking). RESULTS: In adjusted models, results showed greater student social skills, indexed by a mean of annual teacher ratings between kindergarten and 6th grade, predicted lower cardiometabolic risk in adulthood (ß=-0.009, p <.05). In follow-up analyses, results showed the protective effect of student social skills on cardiometabolic risk may be mediated by adult income (ß=-0.0014, p <.05) and diet quality (ß=-0.0031, p <.05). Effects of the other early education indicators were non-significant (ps > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Findings point to the potential significance of early student social competence as a link to long-term health, possibly via the acquisition of resources needed for the maintenance of health, as well as through engagement in health behaviors supporting healthy eating. However, more research is needed to replicate these findings and to elaborate on the role of early student social competence and the pathways explaining its effects on cardiometabolic health in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy dietary habits, decreased physical activity, poor sleep quality, and increasing levels of stress and burnout have all been identified as major concerns of medical students. Due to the rigorous environment of medical school, maintaining a well-balanced and nutritious diet is often replaced by more convenient and nutrient-poor options. Improper dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle both play an essential role in the development of type II diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. These unhealthy trends commonly stem from the innate drive for medical students to achieve at the highest level, sacrificing healthy lifestyle choices to maximize studying. Unfortunately, this dynamic creates a paradox where students create an unhealthy lifestyle to increase academic achievement; however, these destructive living conditions lead to a diminished sense of well-being. As a result, greater rates of burnout, comorbidities, and other maladaptive tendencies diminish success in school. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of lifestyle habits such as nutrition, physical activity (PA), and stress on academic performance (grade point average: GPA) among first- and second-year students at Nova Southeastern University, Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on medical students (n = 161) under institutional review board (IRB) approval. The students voluntarily completed a self-reported survey containing questions about diet, exercise (frequency and type), stress, and self-reported GPA. About 800 students were invited to complete the survey between June 15, 2022, and June 28, 2022. A simple lifestyle indicator questionnaire (SLIQ) score was determined for each student based on their diet, PA, and stress responses. RESULTS: The results showed a significant positive correlation between SLIQ score and high academic achievement. A significant positive association was found between the low academic-achieving (LAA)(2.00-2.99 GPA) vs the high (3.60-4.00 GPA) academic-achieving (HAA) cohorts for physical activity (p = 0.012) as well as diet (p = 0.043). Further, the HAA cohort reported higher satisfaction with their mental and physical health (74% and 54%, respectively) as compared to the LAA cohort (29% each). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated positive correlations between diet and physical activity with high academic achievement. The HAA cohort recorded the highest rates of fruit/vegetable and home-cooked meal consumption and the greatest participation in light, moderate, and heavy exercise when compared to the middle academic-achieving (MAA) (3.00-3.59 GPA) and LAA cohorts. Interestingly, the HAA students also recorded the highest rates of satisfaction with their mental and physical health. As a result, there is a need to promote healthier lifestyle trends among medical students with a focus on diet and physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Pathology, a foundational yet challenging subject in medical education, is marked by its extensive content and intricate concepts. These complexities often pose a significant learning barrier for students, who must not only comprehend but also effectively apply this knowledge in their clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of utilizing cartoons as a supplementary educational tool in pathology. Specifically, it focused on assessing whether incorporating cartoons into the learning process would enhance students' understanding, memory retention, and ability to recall complex topics, thereby augmenting the effectiveness of traditional teaching methodologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Conducted from June to September 2022, this experimental study involved 106 second-year MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) students. Participants were split into two groups: the "traditional group," which received standard interactive large-group teaching, and the "combination group," which benefited from both the standard teaching and additional cartoon-based instruction. The study focused on two selected chapters of the pathology curriculum. After completing the first chapter, the groups were crossed over for the second chapter. Evaluation of the students' learning was conducted through post-learning assessments using multiple-choice questions (MCQs). RESULTS: The combination group, which received both traditional and cartoon-based teaching, showed a significant improvement in their assessment scores compared to the traditional group. This improvement was consistent in both assessments conducted (t(102) = 8.41, p < .001 and t(99) = 6.85, p < .001). Additionally, feedback from the students through a post-learning survey indicated a strong preference for the use of cartoons. The majority of students agreed that cartoons facilitated a better understanding and retention of complex pathology topics (χ² = 130.9, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The incorporation of cartoons as a supplementary learning tool in pathology teaching shows promising results. This innovative approach not only complements but also enhances the traditional teaching methods, leading to improved comprehension, retention, and recollection of complex subjects among medical students. The study highlights the potential of cartoons in revolutionizing medical education, especially in teaching challenging subjects like pathology.

BACKGROUND: Neurological surgery remains one of the most competitive specialties with a match rate of <70%. Historically, medical student performance was gauged through the USMLE Step 1. However, with the recent exam score change, metrics such as recommendation letters, research, and clerkship grades carry increased importance. Research experiences vary greatly between institutions and medical students depend on faculty/resident mentorship in order to facilitate scholarly activity. We previously reported our 2-year intensive research initiative (IRI) in a neurosurgery program. Here we report successful implementation of the IRI in a disparate setting, a department devoid of residents, and demonstrate the IRI's reproducibility with non-resident learners. MATERIALS & METHODS: We compared retrospective data from 2007 to 2020 with the IRI's results during the 2-year study period (July 2020-July 2022). RESULTS: The IRI resulted in a rapid exponential increase in publications, with medical student led peer-reviewed publications (PRPs) increasing 1000% and pre-residency fellow (PRF) PRPs increasing by 4900%. Learner involvement on PRPs pre-IRI was 31%, increasing to 72% post-IRI implementation. CONCLUSIONS: We present the IRI's success increasing academic productivity despite utilizing only non-resident learners. Students underrepresented in medicine and those at non-tier 1 institutions receive unequal research and clinical opportunities, therefore, prioritizing and providing sufficient opportunities/mentorship is crucial in their success in matching into competitive specialties. Our IRI allows for early faculty/resident student mentorship and gives students more flexibility as it allows medical students at varying stages to participate in research with no set time frame.

OBJECTIVE: To identify social determinants of education (SDOE) among pharmacy students enrolled in the entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. METHODS: An original 28-item survey was developed and disseminated to first through fourth year students enrolled in the entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences during the spring 2023 semester. The survey evaluated student demographics, educational performance, and SDOE in 6 categories: physical health, psychosocial health, economic stability, self-motivation, social environment/community, and physical environment/community. RESULTS: A total of 133 students responded to the survey. Over half of the respondents acknowledged difficulties completing errands or self-care tasks owing to their physical, mental, or emotional health. Over half of respondents also reported concerns about covering expenses at the end of the month. Respondents also reported eating less because of financial restraints (20.0%), worrying about housing (22.9%), feeling unsafe in their neighborhood (29.0%), and feeling lonely or isolated (63.4%). In the secondary analysis, the respondents who had concerns with covering expenses, affording food, or losing housing had significantly lower academic performance. CONCLUSION: This study identified several SDOE among pharmacy students at our institution, suggesting that students at even the highest levels of education may be subject to disparities. The identification of SDOE provides insight into barriers that are potentially hidden but are highly likely to impact student engagement and success. Efforts toward reducing disparities and promoting equitable opportunities for students are necessary to ensure continued growth and diversification of the pharmacy profession.

Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a common and crucial intervention. Whether the performance of ETI differs according to the sex of the laryngoscopist remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess sex disparities in markers of ETI performance among novices using a high-fidelity simulator. This prospective observational study was conducted from April 2017 to March 2019 in a public medical university. In total, 209 medical students (4th and 5th grade) without clinical ETI experience were recruited. Of the 209 students, 64 (30.6%) were female. The participants used either a Macintosh direct laryngoscope or C-MAC video laryngoscope in combination with a stylet or gum-elastic bougie to perform ETI on a high-fidelity simulator. The primary endpoint was the maximum force applied on the maxillary incisors during laryngoscopy. The secondary endpoint was the time to ETI. The implanted sensors in the simulator automatically quantified the force and time to ETI. The maximum force applied on the maxillary incisors was approximately 30% lower in the male than female group for all laryngoscopes and intubation aids examined (all P < 0.001). Similarly, the time to ETI was approximately 10% faster in the male than female group regardless of the types of laryngoscopes and intubation aids used (all P < 0.05). In this study, male sex was associated with a lower maximum force applied on the maxillary incisors during both direct and indirect laryngoscopy performed by novices. A clinical study focusing on sex differences in ETI performance is needed to validate our findings.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancers resulting from excessive exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation are on the rise. This study aims to investigate the impact of facial-aging app intervention on promoting safe and healthy behaviors and its influence on reducing students' UV exposure. METHOD: Utilizing a Pretest-Posttest repeated-measures design, we developed a theory-guided web app on the WhatsApp platform, named the Sunshine and Skin Health app. This app allows users to visualize their altered faces in three stages of adolescence, middle age, and old age based on sun protection behavior. The intervention continued within WhatsApp, incorporating 27 health messages grounded in the PMT theory, eight educational files, and a skin cancer video clip. The primary outcome is the change in sun protection behavior between the two groups (intervention and control) immediately after the intervention (T2) and the secondary outcome is the change in sun protection behavior between the two groups at 3 months follow-up (T3). The data are analyzed in SPSS 22 and a significance level of 0.05 is considered. RESULTS: The results revealed no significant difference between the two groups before the intervention. However, in the intervention group, there were significant differences in the utilization of sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen in the last month, as well as sunscreen reapplication after washing their hands and face, both immediately after the intervention and at the 3-month follow-up, compared to the control group (P = 0.001). Furthermore, a significant intervention effect, time effect, and interaction effect between group and time were observed in behaviors related to using sunscreen in the last month and sunscreen reapplication after washing hands and face (P = 0.001). Specifically, the intervention group exhibited a significant difference from Time 1 to 2 and from Time 1 to 3 (p = 0.001), but no significant difference from Time 2 to 3. In contrast, the control group did not show any significant differences over time. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that the Facial-Aging web app can effectively encourage safe behaviors in sunlight. To ensure the maintenance and sustainability of these behaviors over the long term, it is crucial to consider implementing booster sessions. Objective: This study aimed to clarify nursing students' self-assessed levels of nursing skills at a nursing university at graduation and discuss how education and clinical experiences for students and post-licensure nurses should be improved, especially focusing on oncology nursing. Methods: The study population comprised fourth-year students from 2017 to 2019 at the Faculty of Health Science and Nursing, Juntendo University, who had completed all stipulated clinical placements. The Japanese government determined 141 nursing skills and their target levels. Students subjectively evaluated their achieved levels for the 141 nursing skills after the final clinical placement. Results: Of the 141 nursing skills, 81 (57%) were rated as "skills with easy-to-achieve targets" and five were rated as "skills with difficult-to-achieve targets." All nursing skills in the two subcategories of environmental adjustment skills and comfort management skills were rated as "skills with easy-to-achieve targets." Nursing skills with low target achievement rates were for patients with oral intake difficulties, unstable respiratory status, and those requiring glycemic control. These skills are also important in oncology nursing. Conclusions: It cannot be concluded that the nursing university students fully achieved the target levels of nursing skills, as determined by the Japanese government. These findings may facilitate discussions on teaching nursing skills and their target levels at the time of graduation from nursing universities or post-employment.

Introduction This study analyzed the number of peer-reviewed publications submitted by matriculants prior to applying for the orthopedic surgery residency. The graduating residency classes of 2023 and 2027 were included in the study to understand the trend of publications, to inform aspiring orthopedic surgeons. Methods The top, middle, and bottom 10 orthopedic surgery residency programs were identified on the Doximity online website. Matriculants were searched on PubMed and Google Scholar for publication contributions. Variables including number of publications, orthopedic publications, first-author authorship, and H-index were analyzed. A logistic regression model was created, and a t-test was conducted to statistically compare the 2027 and 2023 graduating classes. Results Matriculants of the 2023 match had higher numbers of publications, orthopedic surgery-specific publications, first authorships, and h-indices than the matriculants of the 2018 match. Conclusion The average number of publications has been observed to increase over four years, indicating an increase in competition to match into orthopedic surgery residency. Publishing in higher numbers may be a good indicator of an applicant's success in not only matching but also matching into a higher-tier program.

INTRODUCTION: It is widely recognized that there is a significant correlation between the quality of the learning environment and the level of satisfaction and achievement of students. To enhance the quality of education, it is vital to discern and rectify any inadequacies or deficiencies within the learning environment. Since the examination of strengths and weaknesses of the clinical learning environment provides valuable information to educational managers in improving the quality of education, the primary objective of this study was to examine the educational atmosphere prevalent in the principal clinical departments of the academic medical centers affiliated with Semnan University of Medical Sciences. The investigation was carried out based on the principles of the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted with a descriptive-analytical approach which consisted of 232 trainees and interns affiliated with the departments of pediatrics, gynecology, internal medicine, and surgery. Sampling was done by census method. Then, a standard questionnaire was designed based on the DREEM model in Google Forum and its link was uploaded by representatives in class groups and channels. The data were collected within a period of three months and then were statistically analyzed using SPSS, version 24 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULTS: Based on the results, the mean age of students was 23.92 years. The mean score of the educational environment of interns and stagers based on the questionnaire was 122.45 and 143.35, respectively. Regarding the mean score of the educational environment, a statistically significant difference was observed between pediatric and internal medicine (P-value<0.001), and surgical and internal medicine departments (P-value=0.03). CONCLUSION: In general, the educational environment was evaluated as semi-optimal from students' point of view; thus, it appears imperative for university officials to allocate greater attention toward enhancing the quality of the learning environment by devising more meticulous plans and engaging in consistent self-assessment of the educational landscape.

As the first-in-class, selective, and potent inhibitor of the isocitrate dehydrogenase-2 (IDH2) mutant protein, enasidenib was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 for the treatment of adult patients with relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with an IDH2 mutation. Known for its interactions with various cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes and transporters in vitro, a clinical pharmacokinetics (PK) trial was initiated to assess the impact of multiple doses of enasidenib on the single-dose PK of sensitive probe substrates of several cytochrome P450 enzymes and transporters. In this study, a population pharmacokinetic analysis approach was employed to address challenges posed by high, nonzero baseline caffeine concentrations. Moreover, we integrated full Bayesian inference into this approach innovatively for a more detailed understanding of parameter uncertainty and greater modeling flexibility, alongside Student's t-distribution for robust error modeling in handling the abnormal outlier caffeine concentration data observed in this trial. Our analyses demonstrated that multiple doses of enasidenib altered caffeine clearance to a clinically meaningful extent, as evidenced by an approximate 8-fold decrease. This finding led to a specific recommendation in the package insert to avoid the concurrent use of certain CYP1A2 substrates with enasidenib, unless directed otherwise in the prescribing information. Furthermore, this research underlines the technical benefits of integrating full Bayesian inference and incorporating Student's t-distribution for residual error modeling in the PK field.

Background: Students face great challenges at the beginning of and during their studies. Competitive experience, exam anxiety, and especially the new performance requirements often cause test anxiety and stressful experiences. The extent of substance use in terms of neuroenhancement (NE) is unclear. Evidence shows associations between NE, increased stress levels, and mental health. Objectives: We aim to determine the prevalence of NE and alcohol and tobacco use among college students. We also investigate the associations between NE and ADHD, anxiety, depression, and stress experience. Methods: In spring 2021, an anonymous online cross-sectional survey was conducted among students of medicine, dentistry, business economics, and business informatics in Würzburg. The survey included the instruments ASRS (ADHD), PSS-10 (stress), PHQ-4 (depression and anxiety), and AUDIT-C (alcohol comsumption), as well as questions about consumption patterns, prior knowledge, and reasons for NE. Results: Of the 5564 students who were invited to participate, 1010 completed the questionnaire (18.2%). Of these, 12.4% indicated NE for the studied period. NE was used in particular during preparations for exams, to enhance performance, and/or to regulate emotions, most commonly through caffeine tablets, cannabis, and methylphenidate. NE was associated with risky use of alcohol or tobacco, and to a lesser extent with ADHD symptoms and stress experience.Conclusions: Students are at risk of substance abuse and NE. Effective stress management and prevention approaches as well as low-threshold services are needed to identify and support students with risk profiles.

INTRODUCTION: The recent pandemic has highlighted the importance of addressing well-being in the overall health of students. There is a need for support systems within dental schools to help students demonstrate resilience, adapt to learning environments and thrive in their professional careers. OBJECTIVES: The main aim of the study was to evaluate Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students' understanding and experience of well-being. The objectives were to create a suitable survey to assess students' well-being, investigate the factors affecting dental students' well-being and develop a student well-being action plan based on the analysis of the survey. METHODS: A literature review was conducted to identify and critically assess existing measures of well-being in dental students. Four domains of well-being (emotional, physical, social, intellectual) relevant to dental students were identified. Through a comprehensive iterative process, a two-part survey was developed and tested, which measured individual experiences of well-being across the four domains and collected feedback on proposed initiatives to support student well-being. The survey was disseminated to all 452 dental students from Years 1 through 6, of which 71% (321) responded. RESULTS: The survey revealed low levels of overall well-being among the dental student population, which worsened with increasing years of clinical study. Fear of failing exams presented the biggest challenge with regard to emotional well-being, while sleep deprivation and occupational health hazards most affected the physical well-being domain. Intellectual well-being was compromised by insufficient free time to pursue extracurricular interests and concerns about achieving the required skills. Despite a majority experiencing positive relationships with their peers and tutors, less than a fifth agreed that the Faculty of Dentistry 'supported my well-being as a dental student'. CONCLUSION: As the first investigation of the well-being of dental students in Hong Kong, the key stressors identified were examinations, long schedules and the physical burden of dental work, which are consistent with international literature. The findings reveal students' needs and preferences for well-being initiatives which will be optimized in the implementation of student-centred curricular activities.

Introduction: University students have been particularly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic, and several sociodemographic and behavioral factors may be associated with the risk of overweight in this population. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the pandemic on the eating behavior and nutritional status of university students, and the factors associated with these changes, especially the role of intuitive eating in this process. Methods: This is a repeated measures observational study with data collected in the first and third year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, from students over the age of 18 in the undergraduate programs of a federal university in southeastern Brazil. The survey was conducted using an online form. Eating behavior was assessed using the "Intuitive Eating Scale-2". Results: 251 university students took part, most of them female with a median age of 22. There was an increase in body mass index (BMI) and intuitive eating score between the two periods. In the first year of the pandemic, being female and using tobacco reduced the chances of students being overweight. Living in a marital relationship, worrying about weight gain and body dissatisfaction increased the chances of this outcome. In the third year of the pandemic, it was observed that practicing restrictive diets, having inadequate body perception, worrying about weight gain and living in a marital relationship increased the chances of students being overweight. Being female and eating more intuitively, in line with bodily needs, reduced these odds, demonstrating a protective role in this scenario. Conclusion: There was an increase in BMI and intuitive eating score during the pandemic. Sociodemographic, lifestyle and behavioral variables had both a positive and negative influence on nutritional status. Intuitive eating was shown to be a protective factor during this period, reducing the chances of being overweight in this population. Thus, more intuitive eating may favor greater weight stability, and may, therefore, have helped to reduce the impact of the pandemic on weight gain. In this way, people who ate more intuitively partially resisted the context that favored weight gain (stress, changes in diet and physical inactivity).

BACKGROUND: Components factoring into general surgery clerkship grades vary by institution, and while evaluators attempt to remain unbiased when evaluating medical student performance, subjectivity and implicit bias remain an issue. Our institution recently implemented a case-based structured oral examination to provide the general surgery clerkship director objective insight into students' clinical reasoning skills. We hypothesized that medical students believe this exam, along with graded clinical documentation and the Observed Standardized Clinical Encounter (OSCE), are fair assessments and increase students' awareness of their clinical reasoning skills. METHODS: A survey was sent to third-year medical students in the classes of 2023 and 2024 at our institution who had completed their general surgery clerkship. Students rated five grading assessments (i.e., preceptor evaluations, the oral examination, clinical documentation, the OSCE, and the shelf exam) on fairness and the ability of the assessment to give them insight into their clinical reasoning on a five-point Likert scale 1-5 (with 1 = Strongly Agree, 5 = Strongly Disagree). RESULTS: One hundred and ten of 162 (67.9%) students responded to the survey. The shelf examination was the most highly regarded assessment tool followed by the oral examination. Seventy-three percent agreed or strongly agreed that the oral exam was a fair assessment, and 80% agreed or strongly agreed that it gave them insight into their clinical reasoning skills. Alternatively, only 41.8% of students agreed or strongly agreed that preceptor evaluations were fair assessments and 42.7% agreed or strongly agreed that it gave them insight into their clinical reasoning. CONCLUSIONS: Third-year medical students on a general surgery clerkship favor the shelf examination and a case-based oral examination over other assessment tools regarding fairness and perception of their clinical reasoning. This type of examination can provide general surgery clerkship directors with additional objective data to assess medical students more fairly and improve students' clinical reasoning.
